The Sky Belonged to Her · The True Story of Bessie Coleman
Bessie Coleman picked cotton in Texas, washed laundry for years, and decided the sky belonged to her. This is her true story, told slowly and gently so you can fall asleep inside it. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892, one of thirteen children, she walked four miles to a one room school, kept the family's cotton tally so nobody could cheat them, and read by lamplight from a traveling library wagon. Every flight school in the United States refused her, because she was Black and because she was a woman. So she learned French at night after work, sailed to France, trained at the Caudron brothers' school on the coast of the Somme, and on June 15, 1921 became the first Black woman in the world to earn a pilot's license. She came home Queen Bess, flew air shows from New York to Texas, refused to perform anywhere Black spectators were barred at the gate, walked off a movie set rather than play a demeaning part, survived a crash and wired her friends that as soon as she could walk she would fly, and saved everything toward a flight school for Black aviators. Her life was short, and this story is honest about that, briefly and gently, the way you would tell it to a child at bedtime; and then it keeps going, because her story kept going: the Bessie Coleman Aero Clubs, the first all Black air show in America, flowers dropped from biplanes over her grave for decades, and the photograph of her that astronaut Mae Jemison carried into orbit in 1992.
