A soft three hour sleep meditation for the night of the new moon, and for the thing you want to try again and are afraid to start. A gentle female voice walks you through a small ritual for beginning again without pretending the first attempt went fine, and then lets you fall asleep to hours of warm ambient sound.

The new moon fell today, Saturday the tenth of October, at about ten to twelve in the morning Eastern time. That is the part worth sitting with. The largest beginning in the sky happened in the middle of your day, in daylight, in a part of the sky nobody was looking at, and not one person felt it. By the time you lie down tonight the new month is already about eight hours old. Beginnings do not announce themselves, and you have been waiting to feel something before you start.

Then the history, which is real and which is why this episode exists. The Romans called the first day of the month the Kalends, and they said themselves that the word came from calare, to call out, because in the oldest version of it the month began when somebody watched for the moon and said so out loud. By the time of the story in this episode that watching was long gone and only the name was left.

What was left instead was a bad machine. A year of three hundred and fifty five days, about ten days short of a real one, patched by an extra month that a small college of priests simply decided to insert, or not, each year. The Roman writers accuse them of using that power for their friends. Not dramatically. Steadily. A long run of small self interested decisions, none of them the disaster, until the harvest festivals were arriving in a season with no harvest in it.

And then the repair, which is the heart of this one. In the year forty six before the common era the whole accumulated error had to go somewhere, and you cannot delete days people have already lived. So one year absorbed all of it. The ancient writers count it at about four hundred and forty five days. The longest year in recorded history, lived through in public, with every date wrong and everybody knowing exactly why. The Romans called it the year of confusion. They did not get a fresh start. They got a long ugly correction, and at the end of it the new calendar worked for sixteen hundred years.

This is not about deciding tonight whether the second attempt will work. It is about doing the one thing the priest did, and calling out the day it starts.
