The Tender Hour
A soft three hour sleep meditation for the nights when you are missing a particular person, or you are a long way from home, and the quiet in the room is the hardest part of it. A gentle female voice tells you the real story of Chang'e, the Chinese goddess who lives on the moon, and then lets you fall asleep to hours of warm ambient sound.
This one is for the specific ache of distance. Missing someone. Being far from home. Homesickness. A person you cannot call tonight, or cannot call at all. The Mid Autumn Festival falls a few days after this episode, and it is the festival of reunion, which means it was built by and for the people who could not get there.
You will hear the oldest surviving version of Chang'e, from the Huainanzi, which is far colder than the story most people are told, and then how twenty centuries of Chinese tradition quietly made her kinder. The jade rabbit. The osmanthus tree that heals as fast as it is cut. And the poem Su Shi wrote in the year ten seventy six, drunk, a long way from his brother, which ends on the line that everybody still knows.
HOW TO USE
Lie down, dim your screen, and let it play. The voice fades after about twenty minutes so nothing wakes you; the ambient sound continues for almost three hours. Headphones optional. Set a low volume.
New sleep meditations every Monday, plus rituals on the new and full moons. Subscribe and turn on the bell so a goddess can sit with you each night.
