The Tender Hour
A guided sleep meditation for money worry, financial stress and the scarcity spiral that arrives at two in the morning, voiced gently by Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of abundance. A soft female voice guides you for the first 20 minutes, then almost 3 hours of calm ambient music carries you through the night.
People have Lakshmi wrong. They think she is about money. In the churning of the ocean the first thing that came up was not treasure, it was poison, and Shiva held it in his throat until it stained him blue. The good things came after. The devotional tradition counts her in eight forms and only one of them is money as we would name it. The others are grain and courage and knowledge and children and victory. And her own tradition calls her Chanchala, the restless one, the one who does not stay, because nobody was ever promised that fortune would hold still.
She stands on a lotus, and the lotus will not grow in clean water. It roots in the mud at the bottom of the pond, and that is where it feeds. So the part of the night where nothing resolves is not the failure of the thing. It is the part where the roots are.
At Diwali the lamps are lit before she comes. The house is opened first. Nobody earns the lighting of the lamps. Whatever the number is, it did not come for you tonight. You have enough for tonight, and that is the only bill that is due.
This is part of The Goddess Meditations, a series of female voiced sleep meditations from The Tender Hour, each one guided by a goddess of old myth.
HOW TO USE
Lie down, dim your screen, and let it play. The voice fades after about 20 minutes so nothing wakes you; the ambient sound continues for almost three hours. Headphones optional. Set a low volume.
New sleep meditations every Monday, plus rituals on the new and full moons. Subscribe and turn on the bell so a goddess can sit with you each night.
