A soft three hour sleep meditation for the night of the new moon, and for the thing you keep picking back up. A gentle female voice walks you through a small ritual for putting one thing down, just for tonight, and then lets you fall asleep to hours of warm ambient sound.

The new moon falls tonight, Thursday the tenth of September, at about half past eleven Eastern time. There is genuinely nothing in the sky to look at, which is the whole point of this one. The moon has not gone anywhere. It has come around between us and the sun, so its lit half is turned away from you and it is out in the daytime sky, entirely whole, doing something you cannot watch. Being unable to see a thing is not the same as it being gone.

Then the history, which is real and which is the reason this episode exists. The Athenians ran their months on the moon, and they called the last day, the dark one, hene kai nea, the old and the new, because one day belonged to both months at once and there was no honest way to split it. That was also the day debts came due, and a comedy staged in Athens in the year four twenty three before the common era opens with a man lying awake in the dark counting down to it while everyone else in the house snores. Nearly two and a half thousand years, and not one detail of that has changed.

And then the seisachtheia, the shaking off of burdens, when Solon cancelled the debts of Athens outright and had the marker stones pulled out of the fields. Nobody pretended the debts were not real. They were real, and they were cancelled anyway, because the collecting had come to cost more than the debt was worth.

This is not about forgiving yourself. It is about calling one night's remission on one thing, and putting it beside the bed where it will still be in the morning.

HOW TO USE

Lie down, dim your screen, and let it play. The voice fades after about twenty minutes so nothing wakes you; the ambient sound continues for almost three hours. Headphones optional. Set a low volume.

New sleep meditations every Monday, plus rituals on the new and full moons. Subscribe and turn on the bell so a goddess can sit with you each night.
